Using Motion Guide Layers

Motion Guides enable you to control the movement of symbols in any direction and orientation. Here's a quick guide on making and using them.

Dissymmetry Logo (5,214 bytes)

1) Open a new movie

2) Insert a new Guide Layer above layer 1 by selecting Insert>Guide Layer.

3) Draw the path you want the symbol to follow in the Guide Layer then lock it.

4) Insert the symbol you want to be guided and be sure that "Snap" is on (View>Snap should have a check next to it.)

5) Position your symbol where you want it to be in relation to the guide line.

If the motion guide is a circle, follow steps 6 through 8, otherwise skip to step 8

6) Copy the symbol to a later frame and move it one third of the way around the circle

7) Copy the symbol from the previous step to another later frame and move it two thirds around the circle.

8) Copy the first frame to another later frame.

9) Insert a motion tween between every instance of the symbol and be sure that "Snap to Guide" is checked on them all.

10) If you want the symbol to flip over as it goes around the circle (ie the way a plane would if it were flying and following the circle) Check "Orient to Path" on all of them as well, and rotate the symbol to match the rotation that it should be at that position.

11) When you test and output your movie, everything in the Guide Layer will be invisible, so don't worry about what it looks like.
